President Yoweri Museveni has called upon religious leaders to collaborate with the Government in the pursuit of the wealth creation initiative aimed at eradicating poverty.
During the fundraising ceremony for the construction of Regina Caeli Cathedral and St. Peters Parish at Olio Primary School grounds in Soroti on Saturday 6th January 2024, Vice President Jessica Alupo, delivering a speech on behalf of President Museveni, emphasized that 39% of households in Uganda are ensnared in poverty due to engagement in subsistence farming.
President Museveni generously contributed sh60m towards the construction of the Cathedral, underscoring the urgent need to shift from subsistence farming as it perpetuates poverty and backwardness.
In his remarks, Museveni highlighted the peril of solely working for sustenance, noting the importance of addressing broader human needs that carry a monetary value for a content and prolonged life.
Expressing gratitude for the Church’s continual collaboration with the Government in enhancing living standards through the construction of schools and hospitals, President Museveni stressed the significance of a comprehensive ministry that encompasses both spiritual and material well-being.
Reiterating the sectors crucial for wealth and job creation as commercial agriculture, industries, services, and information communication technology, Museveni urged leaders to guide individuals in selecting profitable enterprises within these domains.

He further informed the audience about the Parish Development Model (PDM) launched in February 2022, designed to transition 39% of households from subsistence living to active participation in the money economy.
Anticipating that addressing poverty at the household level will empower Christians to contribute meaningfully to church projects, Museveni expressed appreciation for the participation of the faithful and well-wishers in the fundraising ceremony.
Vice President Alupo extended gratitude to Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Eciru Oliach, the Bishop of Soroti Catholic Diocese, for the invitation to the fundraising ceremony, acknowledging the invaluable contributions of the faithful to the noble cause.
