In order to address issues with service delivery at the public hospital, the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon Robinah Nabbanja, led a high-level inter-ministerial mission to Kawolo hospital in Buikwe on Wednesday 14th June 2023. The visit comes after a walkout by healthcare professionals at the facility over claims of irregular and delayed payment of salary to hospital staff.

Nabbanja and the group first visited the hospital’s wards and medication stores to familiarise themselves with the surroundings and determine whether the hospital’s staff members were on duty.

All medical staff were present when they visited the theatre, maternity unit, and outpatient department. Following the inspection, the delegation and a few chosen health professionals met with Rt. Hon. Nabbanja.

Nabbanja ascribed the opposition leaders who visit hospitals and excite them as the cause of the health professionals’ indiscipline in laying down their tools.

The disappointed group’s head, Felix Kigoma, apologised to the visiting team and vowed to rally colleagues to resume work while fully acknowledging that the strike was improper.

Officials from the Ministry of Health and Public Service claimed that payments were sent this week despite the industrial action being illegal. They demand that the organisers of the ring be prosecuted.

In a speech to all health professionals, district chiefs, and the Kawolo management, Nabbanja ordered a halt to all political activity in all government hospitals across the nation.

The meeting was attended by the chief administrative officer of the Buikwe district Dunstan Balaba, the state ministers: for health Hanifa Kawooya and Diana Mutasingwa, the vice president’s office state minister in charge of monitoring.
