The Traffic Police have announced major road diversions and closures in Kampala from January 9–11, 2025, to ensure the smooth movement of delegates and security during the African Union Summit at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

Traffic Police spokesperson, Mr. Michael Kananura

The Traffic Police have announced significant traffic diversions in preparation for the African Union (AU) Extraordinary Summit, scheduled to take place from January 9–11, 2025, at Speke Resort Munyonyo, Kampala.

The summit, focusing on the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) Strategy and Recommendation Plan for 2026–2035, is expected to host over 2,000 participants, including delegations from 49 African Union member states.

While addressing the media on January 6, 2024, at the Uganda Police Headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, the Traffic Police spokesperson, Mr. Michael Kananura, announced the closure and diversion of several roads leading to and around the summit venue to ensure security and facilitate the smooth movement of dignitaries.

“To guarantee the safety of delegates and ensure the seamless flow of traffic, certain roads leading to Speke Resort Munyonyo will be restricted from public access during the summit. Traffic will be diverted, and we appeal for public cooperation during this period,” Mr. Kananura stated.

The Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, connecting Entebbe International Airport through the Kajjansi Interchange to Speke Resort Munyonyo, has been designated as the primary summit route and will be strictly regulated, with diversions implemented whenever delegates are in transit.

Traffic Diversions and Restrictions

Mr. Kananura outlined specific traffic management measures:

Mpala: Traffic will be redirected to the Entebbe Highway, reserving the expressway exclusively for summit delegates.

Kisubi: Motorists will be directed to Nakawuka Road for access to Kampala to ease congestion on Entebbe Road.

Kajansi Flyover: Vehicles will be restricted from accessing Munyonyo or the expressway and rerouted towards Lugala, Zana, and the city center.

Serena-Kigo and Mutungo-Kitiko Traffic Lights: Diversions will be enforced at these junctions, with limited public access.

Munyonyo Roundabout: Security checkpoints will screen all vehicles, with non-summit traffic diverted to Salama and Buziga Roads.

Northern Bypass: Diversions will occur at the Busega Flyover and Sentema, Nansana, and Busega interchanges. Traffic flow will be controlled at 50-meter intervals from these points.

Additionally, motorcycles will not be permitted to access Kajansi, Munyonyo, or the summit venue. Boda boda operators are advised to use alternative routes.

Guidance for Airport Travelers

Travelers heading to Entebbe International Airport are urged to plan their journeys in advance to avoid delays caused by the traffic diversions.

“We advise passengers with flights during this period to depart early to avoid missing their flights due to the traffic diversions. Traffic officers will be deployed to guide the public accordingly,” Mr. Kananura added.

The Traffic Police request the cooperation of the public in ensuring the success of this significant event.
