Rwandan Defence Forces meet UPDF for strategic talks in Mbarara

Military officials from Uganda and Rwanda are currently engaged in a three-day meeting aimed at fortifying border security and combating transnational crime. The gathering, which began yesterday, Thursday, August 29th, 2024, in Mbarara City, brings together high-ranking commanders from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Force (UPDF) and the Rwanda Defense Force (RDF).

In an effort to strengthen border security and combat transnational crime, military officials from Rwanda and Uganda are presently holding a three-day meeting. High-ranking leaders from the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Force (UPDF) have gathered at this assembly, which got underway yesterday, Thursday, August 29, 2024, in Mbarara City.

Maj. Kiconco Tabaro, the UPDF Second Infantry Division Public Information Officer, stated that the primary objective of the meeting is to enhance collaboration between the armed forces of both nations and devise effective strategies to address security concerns along their shared border.

Highlighting the longstanding partnership between Uganda and Rwanda, Nelson Nshangabashija, Chairperson of Kabale District, emphasized the importance of continued cooperation and mutual support in safeguarding common interests. He also noted that the current improved relations have helped reduce crime along the border.

Brig. Gen. Nelson Rwigema, the RDF Second Division Commander, expressed optimism regarding the outcomes of previous discussions, predicting positive impacts on legal cross-border trade and the resolution of issues affecting border communities.

“The good relations between the two nations are exemplified by increased interaction between the people of Uganda and Rwanda through communication and trade, among other areas,” he said.

Maj. Kiconco added that Brig. Gen. Emmanuel Shilling, the Uganda Defence Advisor to Rwanda, Col. Emmanuel Luzindana, the Republic of Rwanda Defence Advisor to Uganda, Intelligence officers and unit commanders at operational and tactical levels, are participating in the engagement at Les Vegas Gardens Hotel in Mbarara City.
