In a significant crackdown on cattle rustling in the Karamoja region, the police have arrested 17 suspects and seized eight guns along with 15 rounds of ammunition.
The suspects are believed to be heavily involved in the rampant cattle thefts plaguing the area.
Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma announced the arrests and seizures on Monday, July 22, 2024, while highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat crime in the region.
In addition to the weapons and ammunition, authorities also impounded 32 jerrycans of local gin, commonly known as waragi.
According to Kituuma, the waragi is frequently used by rustlers to boost their bravery before committing crimes.
“The consumption of waragi has been identified as a key factor in emboldening these criminals,” Kituuma said. “We have banned the production and resale of this local gin in the area to curb its misuse and reduce the incidences of cattle theft and other related crimes.”
The crackdown is part of a broader strategy to restore peace and security in Karamoja, a region long troubled by cattle rustling and associated violence.
Kituuma emphasized the importance of the ban on waragi, urging local communities to adhere to the restrictions and support law enforcement efforts.
“Our goal is to create a safer environment for all residents of Karamoja,” Kituuma said. “By removing the tools and substances that facilitate these crimes, we are taking a significant step towards achieving that goal.”
The police operation has been lauded by local leaders and community members, who have long called for stronger measures to address the security challenges in the region.
The arrested suspects are currently in custody and will face charges related to cattle theft and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Authorities have pledged to continue their efforts to dismantle criminal networks and bring perpetrators to justice.
“We will not relent until Karamoja is free from the scourge of cattle rustling,” Kituuma stated. “The safety and well-being of our communities are our top priorities.”
