The government of Uganda has made significant progress in increasing access to 57%, comprising 19% and 38% on-grid and off-grid connections, respectively by end of Last year. This was achieved through the expansion of the grid, the development of mini-grids, and the promotion of off-grid solutions such as solar home systems.

Uganda has diversified its energy mix, moving away from its traditional reliance on hydropower. The country has developed a number of small-scale solar, wind, and geothermal projects, which have helped to increase the supply of renewable energy.

The installed generation capacity in Uganda increased to 1,346 megawatts by the end of 2022 and this was achieved through the development of new hydropower projects, such as Isimba Dam and will raise to 2,000 MW once Karuma Dam is commissioned plus the expansion of existing thermal power plants.

The government has invested in the expansion and upgrading of transmission and distribution infrastructure, which has improved the reliability and quality of power supply. The country has also implemented a number of demand-side management programs to reduce losses and improve efficiency.
