Somalia Joins EAC as 8th Partner State
The Federal Republic of Somalia is depositing its instrument of ratification for the Treaty of Accession with the East African Community, officially becoming the 8th Partner State within the bloc. A high-level delegation is in Arusha, Tanzania, to complete the process under the supervision of the EAC Secretary General.
The Federal Republic of Somalia will officially deposit its instrument of ratification for the Treaty of Accession with the Secretary General of the East African Community (EAC) today, Tuesday, March 5, 2024, marking its formal entry as the 8th Partner State within the bloc.
A distinguished delegation, headed by Somalia’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi, is currently in Arusha, Tanzania, to complete the depositing process at the EAC Headquarters under the supervision of Secretary General (Dr.) Peter Mathuki.
The Treaty of Accession was initially endorsed by Somalia’s President Sheikh Hassan Mohamud and the Chairperson of the Summit of EAC Heads of State, Salva Kiir Mayardit, who also serves as the President of the Republic of South Sudan, during a signing ceremony held in Entebbe, Uganda, on December 15, 2023. The event was witnessed by Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
In adherence to the EAC Admission Procedure for new members, Dr. Mathuki is expected to officially announce the Federal Republic of Somalia as a new member of the Community.
Subsequently, the Secretary General will formally notify Somalia in writing that the new member has successfully deposited the Instrument of Ratification of the Treaty of Accession and is now a full-fledged member of the Community, in accordance with Article 153(1) of the EAC Treaty.
Furthermore, the Secretary General will proceed to deposit the Treaty of Accession with both the African Union and the United Nations, affirming the new member’s commitment to abide by the provisions outlined in the Treaty, as stipulated in Article 153(2) of the Treaty.
The existing seven Partner States include the Republic of Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of Kenya, the Republic of Rwanda, the Republic of South Sudan, the Republic of Uganda, and the United Republic of Tanzania.
