On April 4th, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr., the prominent civil rights leader, was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. King was in Memphis to support a sanitation workers’ strike and had delivered a speech the night before, in which he famously stated, “I’ve been to the mountaintop…I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you, but I want you to know tonight that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land.”
