President Museveni Urges China to Open Market for Finished Goods, Lauds Ongoing Cooperation

During a meeting with a delegation from the National People’s Congress of China, led by H.E Luosang Jiangcun, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda urged China to open its market further for processed goods, emphasizing the importance of value addition. President Museveni expressed gratitude for China’s longstanding support and cooperation in various sectors, including energy, infrastructure, and technology.

The Uganda Coffee Development Authority’s report reveals a 3.4% increase in exported quantity and an 18.3% rise in value compared to the same period last year. Favorable global prices and a robust harvest in the southwestern region contributed to the export performance. Italy, Germany, and Spain were among the top buyers, with Europe accounting for over 68% of total exports.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding domestic manufacturers from unjust competition with foreign counterparts and need to prioritize the protection of local industries, suggesting the imposition of taxes on imported finished products and, at a certain point, on some intermediate goods.
