The Ministry of Information, Communication Technology, and National Guidance has started the Data Protection and Privacy 2024 campaign, advising custodians/duty bearers not to misuse people’s personal data.

Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Minister of ICT, stated that government institutions such as the Uganda Bureau of Statistics and other actors with access to person information and privacy must utilize it for the intended purpose.

“Use the information professionally and ethically to protect people’s privacy.” It’s all about discretion here. Protecting people’s privacy is a fundamental right. “Why should their data be made public?” He made a note of it.

On January 9, 2024, he delivered the statements during the opening of the campaign campaign at the Uganda Media Center in Kampala.

“Stop, Think, Own Your Privacy” will be the subject of the campaign.

He also cautioned the media to always use the material acquired appropriately, deciding what should be released and what should be kept private.

The Data Protection and Privacy Act was passed by the government in 2019, and the Data Protection and Privacy Regulations were established and gazetted by the Ministry of ICT and NG in collaboration with the National Information Technology Authority-Uganda (NITA-U).

According to Barymunsi, the goal is to provide complete and effective protection for Ugandans’ personal data privacy.

He stated that the campaign is part of the preparations for Data Privacy Day, which will be observed on January 31, 2024.

Stella Alibateese, the National Personal Data Protection Director, stated that as Uganda embraces increased digital connection and technical developments, data breaches and information mouse are common, and as a result, securing personal data has never been more important.
