Threads Is Rolling Out Its Hashtags Without the Hash Symbol Globally
Meta’s social network Threads has introduced tags globally, eliminating the need for the hash symbol. Users can tag one topic per post to prevent tag spam. This feature, tested in Australia last month, allows the use of special characters and phrases with spaces, unlike traditional hashtags.
Thursday 7th December 2023 saw a significant update to Meta’s social network Threads as the company began to roll out tags avoidance of the hash symbol on the platform. To prevent tag spam, users will only be able to tag one topic per post.
The company is currently rolling out tags globally, having started testing the feature in Australia last month. People can use special characters along with a phrase that contains spaces, unlike hashtags. Clicking on a tag in a post allows users to view all of the posts in the search view.
To view all posts that contain a particular tag, just type the tag into the search bar. But some posts with that phrase might not be using tags at all. Though you will need to manually add hashtags to the post in the composer, you can still create your own.
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri stated in a post that the goal of this design is to reduce engagement hacking.

“In her story from last month, my colleague Sarah Perez pointed out that another issue is the overpopulation of similar hashtags. Your post might not be seen by people looking for another tag if there is a limit of one tag per post. For example, there are currently three tags for NBA: NBAThread, NBA Threads, and NBA.”
The search function on Threads was extended to “all languages” in all of the nations where the app is accessible last month. According to reports, the business plans to introduce Threads in the EU in accordance with local laws.
The app analytics company Apptopia reported earlier this month that Threads’ daily downloads have increased following a decline in the previous few months.
