In a bid to modernize agriculture and meet the increasing demand for tractors in Uganda, the Agriculture Ministry is in the process of setting up a tractor assembly plant. This ambitious initiative aims not only to enhance the country’s agricultural productivity but also to make mechanized farming more accessible and affordable for local farmers.

Over the years, there’s been a significant surge in the demand for tractors among the farming community, combined with the high costs associated with importing them. For many local farmers, owning a tractor has remained a distant dream, primarily due to its prohibitive cost.

To bridge this gap and support the Uganda’s strategy of agricultural mechanization, the decision to set up a tractor assembly plant at the National Agriculture Mechanization Referral Centre (Namalere) in Wakiso district was made. Expected to be operational within the next two years, this plant is a product of public-private collaboration, ensuring that both expertise and resources are pooled to meet the project’s objectives efficiently.

This project is the partnership between Namalere and CNH New Holland, a global giant in the agricultural machinery industry. CNH New Holland will be represented locally by Coopers Motors Uganda. This alliance promises to bring in state-of-the-art technology and global best practices to the tractor assembly process, ensuring the production of high-quality, durable, and efficient tractors suited for the country’s terrain and farming needs.

The establishment of the tractor assembly plant in Uganda is a significant step towards realizing the vision of a modernized agricultural sector. By providing affordable tractors, farmers will be empowered to increase their productivity, reduce labour-intensive practices, and improve the overall efficiency of farming operations.

Furthermore, the plant will not only cater to the demand for tractors but also play a pivotal role in creating job opportunities and stimulating the local economy. From the production to the distribution and servicing of the tractors, new avenues for employment and entrepreneurship will emerge.

The tractor assembly plant, under the aegis of the Agriculture Ministry and in collaboration with CNH New Holland, signifies a brighter future for the country’s agricultural landscape. As the wheels of these locally assembled tractors begin to turn, they will undoubtedly pave the way for a more prosperous, self-reliant, and modernized agricultural sector.
