Uganda is gearing up to host the 19th Summit of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the Third South Summit under the Group of 77 and China framework in January 2024. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, John Mulimba, highlighted that these international events, during Uganda’s chairmanship, will serve as a strategic platform to showcase the country’s tourism and investment opportunities on a global scale.

Uganda’s tourism sector is poised for significant gains from two imminent international summits scheduled for January 2024, as highlighted by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, John Mulimba, in his address to Parliament. The country is set to host the 19th Summit of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Heads of State and Government, followed by the Third South Summit under the Group 77 and China framework. Mulimba emphasized that Uganda’s chairmanship of these summits would offer a strategic platform to showcase the nation’s distinctive tourism and investment opportunities on a broader international scale.

Presenting a comprehensive statement on the government’s readiness for the summits, Mulimba underscored Uganda’s assumption of the chairmanship of NAM for three years and G77 and China for one year. This, he noted, would undoubtedly contribute to a boost in the economy. The minister highlighted the creation of dedicated websites for NAM and G77 plus China, featuring a comprehensive menu on “About Uganda” containing information related to investment opportunities and tourism.

The events will also feature a business forum designed to facilitate direct business-to-business interactions and partnerships. Mulimba expressed optimism that hosting these summits would not only enhance Uganda’s positive global image but also lead to potential long-term economic and commercial benefits.

In preparation for the events, government entities such as the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), and Uganda Airlines are actively engaged in finalizing rehabilitation works. At Entebbe airport, construction works at the main terminal are progressing well and are anticipated to be completed ahead of the summits.

Additionally, KCCA, along with other local and urban authorities along the Entebbe-Munyonyo-Kampala Corridor, is undertaking beautification works. Local authorities, including Entebbe Municipality, Katabi Town Council, Kajjansi Town Council, Makindye-Sabagabo, and Wakiso District, are mandated to enhance garbage collection and disposal, address street children’s issues, and manage motorcyclists.

KCCA is installing streetlights on selected roads and improving the drainage system. UNRA is actively involved in major road projects, including the Kampala Flyover, the conversion of the Kajjansi-Munyonyo Spur into an expressway, and enhancements to the Kampala Northern Bypass. UNRA is also working on several diversion roads and installing streetlights.

The government has allocated Shs 53.594 billion towards organizing the summits. Hon. Abdu Katuntu (Ind., Bugweri County) acknowledged the continuous improvement of Uganda’s international image, echoing Mulimba’s expectations of significant economic benefits resulting from hosting these high-profile events. Katuntu emphasized the importance of such meetings for Uganda’s economy, citing the positive response from countries like Malaysia expressing interest in the speaker’s conference.
