Uganda Cranes coach, Micho sacked
The Federation of Uganda Football Association mutually terminated the contract of Uganda Cranes Coach, Milutin Sredojević commonly known as Micho ending his second stint as the gaffer with the men’s national football team in a statement released by Federation of Uganda football Association (FUFA) yesterday 14th September 2023.
According to a statement issued by the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) yesterday, the contract of Uganda Cranescoach, Milutin Sredojevi, also known as Micho, was mutually terminated. This marks the end of Micho’s second stint as the head coach of the men’s national football team. This comes just days after the Cranes failed to qualify for the AFCON 2023 .
The Serbian coach, who had previously served as the Cranes’ coach twice, was dismissed exactly a week after Uganda failed to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations despite winning their last group game 2-0 against Niger.
Micho initially took on this role in 2013, departed in 2017 when he was replaced by Sebastian Desabre, and then returned to the position in July 2021. However, his tenure included a disappointing CHAN 2022 campaign that ended in Uganda’s elimination in the group stage. His final task was to lead Uganda to AFCON 2023 qualification, which he couldn’t achieve as the Cranes finished third in a group featuring Niger, Algeria, and neighboring Tanzania.
Micho will forever be remembered as the man who helped Uganda Cranes qualify for 2017 AFCON, then breaking a 39-year jinx.
But he failed to replicate his earlier heroics on his second spell as Cranes coach after he was rehired in July 2021.
“Yesterday, Thursday 14th September 2023, FUFA and Mr. Milutin Sredojevic agreed to mutually end the existing employment contract between the two parties,” reads a statement from the Federation.
“FUFA appreciates all efforts and commitment by Mr. Milutin during his period as Head coach of Uganda Cranes.”
FUFA has not made any further comment Micho’s backroom staff that include Moses Basena (Assistant Coach), Fred Kajoba (Goalkeeping Coach), Arthur Kyesimira (Fitness Coach), Franck Plaine (Performance Coach), Behilil Moussa Elhadj (Video Analyst) and Geoffrey Massa (Team Manager).
The decision comes just before Uganda Cranes start their preparations for the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – They will get the campaign underway with two away fixtures against Guinea and Somalia due November 13 & 20th 2023.
But the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers are expected to start next month in October.
