“The President promised to mechanize agriculture in the 2021-2026 manifesto, and this is a fulfillment of that promise,” Nabbanja said. She emphasized that mechanization aligns with the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) agenda to modernize agriculture and improve livelihoods.

The tractors are part of the mechanization initiative launched by President Museveni in December 2022 to support farmers across Uganda. Nabbanja urged local leaders to guide farmers in embracing modern farming techniques, noting that agriculture remains the backbone of Uganda’s economy.

“With these tractors, farmers can cultivate more land efficiently, increase yields, and reduce the burden of manual labor,” Nabbanja stated. She added that the initiative would enhance food security and set a foundation for sustainable farming practices.

Farmers will access the tractors at a subsidized rate of UGX 50,000 per acre. Nabbanja cautioned caretakers against overcharging farmers and reminded them that the tractors are community assets.

Finance Minister Matia Kasaija underscored the importance of mechanization, explaining that a single tractor can clear 10 acres in one day, saving time and mitigating risks from unpredictable weather. He encouraged farmers to leverage this opportunity to improve their productivity.

Regional agricultural hubs, including the Bulindi Zonal Agriculture Research and Development Institute (ZARDI), will provide tractor services and modern farming guidance. These centers aim to reduce logistical challenges for farmers in remote areas.

Local leaders and Members of Parliament in Bunyoro praised the government for delivering the long-awaited tractors. Buyaga West MP Barnabas Tinkasimire called for improved agricultural extension services, while Buhaguzi East MP Stephen Aseera Itaza expressed optimism that the tractors would transform agriculture into a viable business.

“This is real transformation from rudimentary means to modern farming. We request more tractors to meet the high demand,” said Norah Bigirwa Nyendwoha, the Buliisa District Woman Representative.

The ceremony was attended by MPs, district chairpersons, Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), and other local leaders.
