Uganda National Boxing Team Set for 2023 Africa’s Elite Boxing Championship

Uganda’s national boxing team, “The Bombers,” were flagged off to participate in the 2023 Africa’s elite Boxing Championship in Yaoundé, Cameroon.The team consists of 17 top-tier boxers, and they embody the nation’s dedication to raising its global boxing stature. This event, attracting participation from 35 countries, serves as a significant preparatory stage for the Africa Olympic qualifiers scheduled for September 2023 in Dakar.

At least 35 countries including DR Congo, Tanzania, Comoros, Cameroon, Senegal, Egypt, and others confirmed their participation in the competition which aims to foster competitiveness among the boxers. The competition in Cameroon is in preparation for the Africa Olympics qualifiers scheduled for September 2023 in Dakar and for the Olympic qualifiers.  

This year, the prize money has been increased, with gold medallists receiving $20,000, silver medallists receiving $10,000, and $5,000 awarded to each of the two bronze medallists. In the previous edition, two Ugandans won bronze and received $2,500 each, placing Uganda in the overall 15th position tied with Guinea in the rankings.

The Bombers are not only fighting for personal victory but also representing their country, embodying national pride and resilience. Their journey signifies the evolution of boxing in Uganda and their continued contribution to shaping the sport’s future in the country.
