Uganda Secures Gold Medals at African Military Games in Abuja
The UPDF boxing team won four gold and two silver medals at the African Military Games in Abuja, showcasing Uganda’s strength and dedication in military sports.

The Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) boxing team showcased an outstanding performance, at the ongoing African Military Games in Abuja, Nigeria, securing four gold and two silver medals.
In the men’s category, Private Geoffrey Ochan (light flyweight) earned a gold medal after a swift victory over Nigeria’s Adegbamiji Akeem, ending the match in just two minutes during the second round.
The team captain, Private Amoko Innocent (light welterweight), also clinched gold following a decisive triumph against Nigeria’s Qozeem Qoyum.
Meanwhile, bantamweight Private James Jopyem and cruiserweight Private Adam Jamidali each secured silver medals after facing defeats by Kenya’s Stephine Onaja and Algeria’s Kanoun Oussum, respectively.

In the women’s category, the UPDF team continued to excel, winning two gold medals.
Featherweight Private Joyce Kugonza dominated Nigeria’s Pamilerin Akintayo, claiming victory in the third minute of the second round. Similarly, light welterweight Private Erina Namutebi delivered an impressive performance, defeating Nigeria’s Oben Blessing within regulation time.
Brigadier Richard Karemire, the Joint Staff Officer for Formal Education, Sports, and Culture, lauded the team for their exceptional achievements and expressed gratitude to the UPDF leadership for their steadfast support.
“Special thanks go to our Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for his unwavering support. The sportsmen prepared diligently for the tournament, and these results are a testament to their hard work,” remarked Brig. Karemire.

Uganda’s athletes are participating in various disciplines, including boxing, track, and field events, as part of the African Military Games, which have attracted 26 nations.
The second edition of the games commenced on November 20, 2024, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Nigeria, marking the revival of the event after a 22-year hiatus.
The games, held under the theme “Enhancing Military Cooperation Through Sports,” aim to foster military solidarity across the continent, promote African cultural diversity, and strengthen unity among nations.
