Uganda Sets Ambitious Targets for Tourism Revenue Growth
Uganda aims to boost annual tourism revenue to $1.9 billion and increase inbound tourism revenue per visitor to $1,500, as revealed by Minister Tom Butime during the unveiling of the 2023 tourism performance report.
Uganda’s tourism authorities have articulated their intention to augment the annual tourism revenue to approximately 1.9 billion U.S. dollars, alongside elevating the inbound tourism revenue per visitor from 1,052 dollars to 1,500 dollars.
This disclosure was made by Ugandan Minister of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, Tom Butime, during the launch of the “Dissemination of Tourism Industry Performance 2023” report, held on Tuesday.
The minister conveyed that Uganda witnessed a surge in tourism revenue for the fiscal year ending in 2023, surpassing 1 billion U.S. dollars, compared to about 687.2 million dollars recorded in the preceding fiscal year of 2022. He attributed this growth to the extensive tourism promotion efforts spearheaded by the ministry and other stakeholders.
The report underscores that international tourism arrivals surged to approximately 1.3 million in 2023, marking a notable increase of 56.5 percent from the figures recorded in 2022. It further highlights that inbound tourism from Africa continues to command a significant portion, accounting for 89.2 percent of Uganda’s tourism influx.
Tourism stands as one of Uganda’s principal sources of foreign exchange, contributing an estimated 5 percent to the nation’s gross domestic product, as per data from the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development.
