Uganda Shines as Host Country for Africa’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers
Uganda has been chosen by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to host the last round of the African region’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup qualifiers from Dec 7th – 18th 2023. The development was verified to Xinhua by Alan Mugume, the Uganda Cricket Association’s (UCA) Chief Executive Officer.
The event is set to take place from December 7th to 18th at the Lugogo Cricket Oval in the capital Kampala. Eight teams will compete, including the home team, Uganda, two teams that will advance from the Division Two qualifiers in Botswana in October, and Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Rwanda, Nigeria, and Namibia.
The top two teams from the Kampala qualifiers, under the ICC, will represent Africa in the international Women’s T20 World Cup qualifiers in Bangladesh in 2024.
The UCA Operations Manager, Joshua Mwanja, commended ICC for having the confidence to choose Uganda to host yet another prestigious tournament.
“We are excited to host the T20 Women’s qualifiers. This shows the faith that ICC has in our capacity to host an event of this magnitude. The work for us starts immediately to prepare the grounds and also ensure we get local partners to come on board and support us,” added Mwanja.
Uganda participated in the T20 Women’s global qualifiers before, in the Netherlands in 2018, after winning the African regional qualifiers in Namibia in 2017.
