Uganda is slated to host the 2025 Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme summit following outcomes from the 37th African Union Heads of State Assembly in Addis Ababa. During the assembly, the heads of state endorsed the G25 Kampala Declaration on coffee, marking coffee as a strategic crop for the continent.

Uganda is set to host the 2025 Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP) summit.

The development is one of the outcomes of the 37th African Union Heads of State Assembly, which took place this month in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

During the same event, the heads of state also endorsed the G25 Kampala Declaration on coffee, making coffee a strategic crop for the continent. The G25 coffee summit was held in November last year in Kampala.

The resolutions were endorsed during a special session held on February 19, 2024, Frank Tumwebaze, the agriculture minister, said on Tuesday.

The minister was one of Uganda’s representatives at the summit. Also at the summit was Uganda Vice-President Jessica Alupo as well as a delegation from the foreign affairs ministry.

Great wins

Hailing the developments as great wins for Uganda, Tumwebaze said the summit will be held in Kampala, Uganda in January 2025.

He added that the extraordinary #AUSummit will among others consider the post-Malabo CAADP framework. Uganda currently chairs the Special Technical Committee on Agriculture, Rural Development and Water (blue economy).

The East African Community (EAC), to which Uganda is a member, embraced and domesticated the CAADP agenda and is committed to the June 2014, African Heads of State Malabo Declaration on Agriculture Growth and Transformation in Africa.

The goals of Malabo include reducing levels of poverty, ending hunger on the continent and tripling intra-African trade in agricultural goods, among others by 2025.

VP hailed

Tumwebaze, who took to X, formerly Twitter, to celebrate the developments, thanked Alupo and the foreign affairs ministry team for the leadership and support which resulted in the victories for Uganda.

About the AU summit

The AU summit convened on various dates from January 15, 2024, to February 18, 2024.

During the Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) opened on Saturday, February 17, African leaders deliberated on a number of continental issues, ranging from regional peace and security to continental development, the reform of the AU, and Africa’s increased presence on the international stage, as well as boosting the continent’s socio-economic and infrastructure integration.

This year’s event was held under the theme: Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality and relevant learning in Africa.
