Uganda to send four weightlifters to All-Africa Games
At the 2024 All-Africa Games, weightlifting will be represented by four athletes. Initially, the Uganda Weightlifting Federation (UWF) had selected 11 athletes. However, the National Council of Sports (NCS) only allocated weightlifting four slots.
Four weightlifters will compete at the 2024 All-Africa Games. Initially, the Uganda Weightlifting Federation (UWF) nominated 11 athletes. The National Council of Sports (NCS) only awarded four seats for weightlifting.
The team of four, comprising two men and two women, will be led by head coach Khasim Nsubuga. The male athletes are Stephen Ojede and Davis Niyoyita, alongside national team debutant Aisha Namataka and team captain Lydia Nakidde.
Of the four athletes, only Davis Niyoyita has previously participated in the All-Africa Games. Niyoyita was part of the contingent that competed in the 2019 All-Africa Games in Rabat, Morocco. Niyoyita expressed his determination to rectify past mistakes.
“This will be my second time at the All-Africa Games. I have trained hard, and I believe that if I remain healthy, I have what it takes to win a medal.”
Coach Khasim Nsubuga emphasized that the selection was based on the athletes’ performances during the training camp.
“We have chosen the best of our athletes. They have shown dedication through hard work. I have great confidence in them because I believe they have the potential to excel in Accra,” Nsubuga explained.
Team captain Lydia Nakidde will compete in the 64 kg category, Namataka in the 87 kg category, Davis Niyoyita in the 55 kg category, and Stephen Ojede in the 96 kg category.
“I am grateful that none of us are injured. Over the past month and a half, we have acquired numerous skills during our training camp. I am confident that if we apply these skills effectively, we will deliver an outstanding performance,” Nakidde stated.
The team that has their last training on Tuesday is scheduled to depart on Thursday ahead of the All-Africa Games, which are set to commence on Friday. The games will run from Friday until the 23 and will be hosted in the capital of Ghana, Accra.
