Uganda’s Gazelles, Set to Soar in FIBA Afro Basket Tournament in Rwanda
In an inspiring display of talent, determination, and teamwork, the Uganda Female Basketball team, fondly known as the Gazelles, is gearing up to compete in the prestigious FIBA Afro Basket tournament in Rwanda. On Tuesday 25th July 2023, the Gazelles were ceremoniously flagged-off for the tournament by the Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) President, Nasser Sserujongi, and the Chairman of the National Council of Sports, Mr. Ambrose Tashobya.
The FIBA Afro Basket tournament, scheduled to take place from July 28th to August 6th, 2023, is set to bring together 11 countries from across Africa. The competition promises to be intense, as each team will be vying for the ultimate glory and a chance to be crowned the champions of Africa.
Having been drawn into Group C, the Gazelles face formidable opponents of Senegal and Mali. The group stage presents an excellent opportunity for the Gazelles to demonstrate their mettle against some of the continent’s best teams.
Under the guidance of their dedicated coaching staff and the leadership of seasoned players, the Gazelles have honed their skills. Their impressive showing in the Zone V Qualifiers where they emerged victorious against Egypt, proves that they have the potential to go toe-to-toe with the very best and make their nation proud.
The FUBA President, Nasser Sserujongi, expressed his confidence in the team, emphasizing that they have put in a tremendous amount of effort and preparation to represent Uganda at the highest level. He also highlighted the importance of such international tournaments in fostering growth and development of basketball in the country.
The Gazelles’ journey to Rwanda has been a culmination of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication.
