UNSA and Education Ministry Partner to Equip Students in Fight Against Corruption
The Uganda National Students Association (UNSA), in partnership with the Ministry of Education, has launched a nationwide campaign to train students in combating corruption through debates and community engagement, aiming for a corruption-free Uganda by 2030.
The Uganda National Students Association (UNSA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, has announced a nationwide campaign aimed at training and equipping students with the knowledge and skills to combat corruption.
The initiative will involve training students to discreetly gather information on corrupt activities within their communities through debates. The collected information will be forwarded to a central website created for this purpose.
UNSA President, Francis Okot, made the announcement during the launch of the National Anti-Corruption Debate competition at Lakeview Secondary School in Jinja City on Monday, August 26, 2024.
The campaign, spearheaded by UNSA, aims to achieve a corruption-free Uganda by 2030. According to Okot, the program targets students from secondary schools and institutions of higher learning across the country.
“We covered 142 districts before selecting district representatives at the national level,” he stated.
Approximately 240 schools, with over 2,800 students, gathered in Jinja to debate and brainstorm solutions to the challenges of corruption.
Okot also revealed that the university-level national debate competition campaigns are scheduled to commence towards the end of this year. He noted that winners will receive various awards, with the top 20 debaters receiving medals and trophies, and the best debaters and public speakers being awarded laptops.
The campaign, initially planned for early August, was delayed due to the unavailability of facilities to accommodate the over 2,800 participants.
Youth and Children Affairs State Minister, Hon. Balam Barugahara, represented President Yoweri Museveni at the launch and contributed $300 (approximately UGX 1,080,000) towards the purchase of a cow for the competitors.
