The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has announced a recruitment exercise targeting 1,600 professionals and Senior Six graduates with science combinations.

The required combinations include Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics (BCM); Physics, Economics, and Mathematics (PEM); Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM); Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB); and Mathematics, Economics, and Geography (MEG).

Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye, the UPDF spokesperson, made this announcement during a press conference at the army headquarters in Mbuya, Kampala, on Wednesday, June 19.

“We are going to recruit more Ugandans into the UPDF. As you are aware, we have been undertaking the process of recruiting Senior Four graduates, which is nearing completion. This time, we will recruit professionals,” he stated.

He noted that the 1,600 officers to be recruited are part of a general recruitment exercise of 9,627 regular forces into the Infantry, which commenced on July 1, 2024, and will conclude on July 14, 2024, at various recruitment centers.

“We are recruiting both degree and diploma holders in engineering fields,” he added. These include carpenters, electricians, painters, specialized fabricators, heavy engineering equipment operators, and mechanics, among others.

In addition to these professionals, Kulayigye mentioned the recruitment of scientists.

“These scientists are Senior Six graduates with combinations of PEM, PCM, PCB, BCM, and MEG. They should have at least one principal pass in Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, or Geography,” he explained.

The age range for applicants is between 18 and 28 years.

“The recruitment exercise will span 14 days. The application period will start on July 3, 2024, and end on July 10, 2024, including the sorting of applications. All applications must be submitted on the UPDF website by July 3, as the entire application process is online,” Kulayigye stated.

He also mentioned that applicants would be uploaded online from July 11 to July 14, 2024.

“On July 15, the applicants who successfully pass the application screening will report to Bombo Military Barracks for further screening, which will end on July 28,” he said.

Kulayigye emphasized that those interested in joining the UPDF should apply immediately.

He reiterated that the usual requirements include being a Ugandan citizen, being medically fit, ready to undergo medical tests, and willing to participate in physical fitness tests.
