UPDF and FARDC forces working together have claimed to have killed at least 20 ADF militants in eastern DR Congo.

Twenty rebels were neutralized in an operation that saw the joint forces launch a surprise attack on an ADF camp in the dense forests south-west of the River Lusulubi close to the River Semuliki-Rwenzori Sector. One UPDF soldier was also killed in the shootout.

The UPDF released a statement stating that the ADF had been captured along with “four AK-47s, five magazines, solar panels, two UPDF combat uniforms, seven FARDC combat uniforms, five walkie-talkie charging ports, five radios, five batteries, two phones, three back packs, two ponchos, and two finishing nets.”

The multinational forces fighting under Operation Shuja have maintained their winning streak against the ADF, the Islamic State group’s affiliate in Central Africa.

Elias Ssegujja, one of the most wanted and senior commanders of the ADF, was slain earlier this month by the UPDF and Congolese army.

Ssegujja, who was born in Uganda, joined the ADF at its founding and later rose through the ranks to become its third-in-command at the time of his demise.

Sseguja has advanced in rank and position as a result of the recent deaths and captures of several top ADF commanders in order to fill the void left behind.

He was charged of organizing numerous violent attacks against people as a field commander, running a mobile camp, torching UN armored vehicles, caning disobedient individuals, and murdering civilians thought to be assisting the DRC army.

Prior to becoming a commander, Ssegujja had also worked with the artillery and held the position of chief of combat and operations.
