UPDF Engineers Brigade Praised for Excellent Work on Entebbe Airport Expansion Project
Major General Leopold Kyanda, the Joint Chief of Staff of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), commended the remarkable efforts and advancements made by the UPDF Engineers Brigade during their modifications to the passenger terminal building at Entebbe International Airport on November 16th, 2023.
The Joint Chief of Staff of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), Major General Leopold Kyanda, commended the remarkable progress and high quality of work achieved by the UPDF Engineers Brigade in the modification of the passenger terminal building at Entebbe International Airport yesterday 16th November 2023.
During a recent inspection visit, Maj Gen Kyanda expressed his admiration for the brigade’s ability to surpass the project deadline and deliver exceptional results. He attributed this success to the UPDF’s close supervision and monitoring of the construction process.
Maj Gen Kyanda emphasized the importance of utilizing the UPDF’s own engineering capabilities for government construction projects. He highlighted the brigade’s expertise and proven track record of efficiency, which surpasses that of private contractors.
He further noted that the UPDF Engineers Brigade operates with a focus on providing services to the public at a minimal cost, rather than seeking profit maximization. This approach has resulted in significant cost savings for the government compared to engaging private contractors.
The Commander of the UPDF Engineers Brigade, Brig Gen Besigye Bekunda, elaborated on the project’s technical complexity and its significance as part of a broader initiative involving 290 infrastructure projects undertaken by the brigade.
He specifically mentioned the ongoing renovations at Mandela National Stadium in Namboole, the Kajjansi National Medical Stores Oxygen Plant Base, and the Regional Immigration Office in Gulu City as examples of the brigade’s extensive contributions.
Brig Gen Bekunda also highlighted the positive impact of the brigade’s work on local communities, emphasizing the employment opportunities created and the subsequent improvement in living standards.
The construction work at Entebbe International Airport commenced on May 25, 2022, and is scheduled for completion by January 2, 2024. The current physical progress stands at an impressive 95%.
The Joint Chief of Staff’s inspection was accompanied by Chief of Staff Land Force, Maj Gen Jack Bakasumba, and other UPDF Service Chiefs.
