Al-Shabaab sniper fire from inside multi-story structures and other pockets of resistance from fleeing remnants met the rescue fighting team with resistance.

Due to the firefight, Somali villagers who had fled the area are now returning to reclaim their homes.

After a thorough search of the region, Brig Gen Peter Gaetano Omola, the sector one commander in charge of the operation at Goloweyn tactical base, confirms that everything is back to normal.

Civilians and travelers were free to carry on with their normal duties.

“We have combed the area to ensure no Al-Shabaab element is hiding, and the road has been cleared of bombs. Normalcy has returned. People can now go on with their daily work.” Brig. Gen. Omola reassured, adding, “As UPDF serving under African Union Transition Mission in Somalia remain committed to supporting a Somali led peace and stability process as mandated by African Union.”

On the 26th of May 2023, Alshabaab assaulted and took control of the UPDF forces’ forward operating post at Buulo Mareer by utilizing three bomb-laden trucks and over 800 militants.
