VAR to Debut at CHAN 2024 in East Africa
CAF has confirmed the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology for the forthcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) in East Africa.
CAF Competitions Officer Serge Aussume confirmed this development during a Local Organizing Committee (LOC) meeting held at Silver Springs Hotel in Bugolobi on Tuesday.
“VAR will enhance the integrity and quality of the games, aligning with global football standards,” Aussume told the congress while emphasizing VAR’s significance in ensuring fair play and accuracy in officiating.
He added that CAF will cooperate with the different local organizing committees to ensure that equipment and facilities are in place for the successful deployment of VAR.
State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, welcomed the move. He reiterated the government’s commitment towards providing world-class facilities for the tournament.
The minister continued that all infrastructure, including the VAR setup, will be completed by February 1, 2025.
Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania will co-host the tournament between 1st and 28th February 2025, a preparatory event for AFCON 2025.
A total of 19 nations have confirmed participation in a tournament of locally based players.
