Vipers SC’s Glorious Victory: Champions of the 2023 StarTimes Uganda Premier League
Vipers SC reaffirmed their place as the repeat winners of the Uganda Premier League in a dramatic victory on Saturday 27th May, 2023, prompting wild celebrations at the St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende. The Vipers won thanks to goals from Abubakar Lawal who scored twice, along with goals from Yunus Sentamu, Martin Kizza, and Bright Anukani.
The Vipers defeated Busoga United 5-0 to win their sixth top division championship. Vipers and Kampala Capital City Authority FC both finished the season with 53 points, but the Vipers won the trophy because of their superior goal differential.
Vipers needed a key outcome to go in their favour in order to win their most recent championship, and SC Villa’s 1-0 loss to Uganda Revenue Authority SC was the one that did it.
After KCCA defeated Bright Stars 5-0, SC Villa who had started the much-awaited day as the favourites, finished the season in third place with 52 points.
KCCA and Vipers tied on points (53), but having a better goal differential, Vipers won the championship.
The Vipers won thanks to goals from Abubakar Lawal who scored twice, along with goals from Yunus Sentamu, Martin Kizza, and Bright Anukani.
Forward Rogers Mato scored four goals while Charles Lwanga added a fifth goal for KCCA FC against Bright Stars in Lugogo. But Jackson Mayanja’s team was only able to claim the second place in the overall standings.
Fans of SC Villa, who had flocked to Wankulukuku in large numbers, left dissatisfied.
Najib Fesali’s goal in the second half gave URA FC a 1-0 victory over the home team SC Villa in front of a nearly full Mutesa II Stadium crowd in Wankulukuku.
Given their edge over rivals Vipers and KCCA FC, Villa supporters anticipated a triumphant event at Wankulukuku earlier in the day.
Charles Bbaale’s efforts kept Villa’s prospects of scoring alive early on, but URA’s well-prepared defensive line blocked their attacks.
Najib Fesali headed the ball into the goal after URA converted a free kick from Saidi Kyeyune in the 61st minute, ending SC Villa’s chances of winning the championship. Nafian Alionzi, the goalie for URA, stopped all of SC Villa’s attempts to tie the score.
Several shocked, Villa supporters left the stadium as the final whistle blew, while others yelled curses at URA FC players for depriving them of the championship.
Similarly, SC Villa players were spotted in tears at the conclusion of the game, clearly upset over their inability to end their two-decade championship drought.
