Yeko Seals a Historic Gold Win for Uganda at the World University Games

In an exceptional turn of events at the World University Games in Chengdu, 19-year-old Yeko from Uganda made history by securing the country’s first gold medal. On the global track, he outran competitors in the men’s 10,000m race and claimed the first-ever gold medal for Uganda at the World University Games held in Chengdu, China. Yeko’s outstanding performance, finishing the race in a remarkable time of 28:59.2, won accolades globally and placed Uganda on the map in a significant way.

“My dream now is to win also the 5,000m race. I have to work on certain things and make sure am ready for that event come Friday,” Yeko said.

“This is my first time competing outside Africa and am so proud of this moment. The 5,000m will be different but I will do my best to win,” he continued.

Uganda’s position in the medal standings, is 22nd ahead of prominent competitors like South Africa and the USA. The successful participation of Uganda at these games is indeed an impressive milestone, serving as a testament to the athletes’ relentless efforts and the unwavering support from the country.

Apart from the athletes’ sheer perseverance and skill, Uganda’s noteworthy participation at the World University Games was also facilitated by the National Insurance Corporation Limited (NIC).
